Emergency Road Closure Teton Pass

Emergency Road Closure Teton Pass

Major Highway Through Western Wyoming Partially Collapsed Saturday

By Emily Mae Czachor June 9, 2024 12:50 PM EDT CBS News

Part of Teton Pass, a crucial highway weaving through the mountains of western Wyoming, collapsed Saturday morning after days of heavy rain.

A massive chunk of the roadway gave way, sending large boulders and debris tumbling down the mountainside. The collapse occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time, and no injuries have been reported.

The collapse has closed the highway in both directions, and officials are urging motorists to avoid the area. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is assessing the damage and working to repair the roadway as quickly as possible.

WYDOT spokesman Tom Minnick said the collapse is a "major event" and that it could take several weeks to repair the roadway. He said the collapse is likely due to the recent heavy rain, which has caused the soil to become saturated.
